Keheewin School

Keheewin Elementary School opened in September, 1981 to serve the students of Keheewin and Bearspaw.  The school has experienced fairly rapid growth and has a maximum enrollment guideline.  There are presently about 378 students in the school.

Classes are organized heterogeneously according to grades. French as a second language is taught in grades 4, 5, and 6. There are two complete computer labs, a music specialist, a teacher-librarian, a library technician, a computer specialist, and various student clubs.

The name of Chief Kehewin of the Cree Indian Band, who lived in the Kaskitayo area, was chosen for the school.  The Chief was named after the “Eagle” (Kehew in Cree).  As a young man he distinguished himself for his bravery in the many fights with the Blackfoot and became chief early in life.  He died in 1887 at Onion Lake, Saskatchewan.
